Billy Bragg once said, “Shirley Collins is without doubt one of England’s greatest cultural treasures.” It’s fitting, then, that EMI have brought together the albums Anthems In Eden (1969) and Love, Death & The Lady (1970) that Shirley recorded with her sister Dolly for the Harvest label, topping off the package with Shirley’s 1976 solo album Amaranth. There was also a preceding “duo” LP, Power Of The True Love Knot, released on Polydor in 1968, but then we’d be well on our way to a box set (as we were in 2003) rather than a double CD.

What we do have is two hours’ worth of material, with Dolly’s organ giving the material a hymn-like quality. Highlights include the six-minute Young John and the second disc’s Polly On The Shore, a warning to all those tempted by the glamour of a life at sea.
Shirley Collins No Roses Rarebit
With her austere style and fondness for traditional arrangements, Shirley Collins never had the crossover potential of Sandy Denny – though she did briefly go electric on 1971’s No Roses, and garnered a cover from 10,000 Maniacs. But on this evidence she is a taste worth acquiring.
